Il video è stato proiettato all’interno del “Folkestone’s Fishing Heritage and History Museum” nei giorni 16-17-18 febbraio 2024, in occasione del “Profound Sound Festival” di Folkestone, ed è il frutto di una residenza e di un workshop di Iginio De Luca e Luis Do Rosario avvenuti tra ottobre e novembre del 2023 nella stessa cittadina, situata sul mare a sud dell’Inghilterra, di fronte la Manica.
Il senso poetico del lavoro è di legarsi con l’audio al luogo e alle persone che lo abitano; predisporsi all’ascolto, sintonizzarsi sull’identità e la memoria di un territorio tramite i suoni di elementi apparentemente statici, inanimati. Il contatto epidermico e caldo con le superfici di un paesaggio, è il pretesto tattile per estrapolare questi suoni, un’azione immersiva, che contempla un rapporto intimo con la materia che si fa parlante. Il soggetto del video è la mano, protagonista autonoma che viaggia ed esplora e, come uno scanner acustico, provoca le superfici generando suoni. La mano stimola le potenzialità musicali del “Sound Mirror”, gigantesco strumento bellico a forma concava, per l’amplificazione analogica di suoni nemici, per poi scendere in città, passando per i vicoli interni, le ringhiere, le staccionate, le lamiere, le mura domestiche, la chiesa antica e i vecchi binari della ferrovia, portandoci in basso al porto, con i suoni delle carene delle barche ormeggiate nel mare in secca. Tutte le tracce acustiche, infine, confluiscono nei suoni marini, come se la natura inglobasse a se l’intero flusso prodotto che abbraccia, sommerge e fa riemergere simbolicamente una città che s’identifica ciclicamente nel respiro magnetico e lunare delle maree. La fine del video inquadra romanticamente una figura contemplativa di spalle che gradualmente viene raggiunta dal mare e che silenziosamente ci rivolge un invito: close your eyes.

The video was screened at the “Folkestone’s Fishing Heritage and History Museum” on February 16-17-18, 2024, during the “Profound Sound Festival” in Folkestone. It is the result of a residency and workshop by Iginio De Luca and Luis Do Rosario that took place between October and November 2023 in the same town, located on the sea in southern England, facing the English Channel.
The poetic sense of the work is to connect with the place and the people who inhabit it through audio; to prepare for listening, to tune into the identity and memory of a territory through the sounds of seemingly static, inanimate elements. The epidermal and warm contact with the surfaces of a landscape is the tactile pretext for extracting these sounds, an immersive action that contemplates an intimate relationship with matter that becomes speaking.
The subject of the video is the hand, an autonomous protagonist that travels and explores and, like an acoustic scanner, triggers surfaces generating sounds. The hand stimulates the musical potentials of the “Sound Mirror,” a gigantic concave-shaped war instrument, for the analog amplification of enemy sounds, before descending into the city, passing through the inner alleys, railings, fences, metal sheets, domestic walls, the ancient church, and the old railway tracks, leading us down to the harbor, with the sounds of the hulls of boats moored in the dry sea.
All the acoustic tracks ultimately converge into the sounds of the sea, as if nature were encompassing the entire produced flow, embracing, submerging, and symbolically re-emerging a city that cyclically identifies itself in the magnetic and lunar breath of the tides.
The end of the video romantically frames a contemplative figure from behind, gradually reached by the sea, silently inviting us: close your eyes.
